The NBCD and it's mission.
A non-profit voluntary organisation set up in 1990 to empower people with disabilities, their families and commmunities to meet challenges posed by physical or mental impairment and to maximize their opportunities for inclusion into the main stream of society. One of it's major projects is Prerana, our school, which was created with great support from the council in 1998.

Activities - Prerana
Prerana is a cross-disability education and rehabilitation institution which provides formal, non-formal, academic, and rehabilitation services to 145 students. Being one of the NBCD'S main projects, it caters to a lot of activities and facilities.

NUMBER 1 -:
RESIDENTIAL FACILITIES FOR THE VISUALLY CHALLENGED - Commuting from remote tea garden areas and to Prerana for visually impaired students may prove to be hard and impractical, hence we provide accommodation within the school!
NUMBER 2 -:
DAY BOARDING - Buses and accompanying staff are always available for those who stay near the school or in Siliguri. Learn more from the contact page!
NUMBER 3 -:
WELL-EQUIPPED SECTIONS - Prerana is divided into 5 sections, Surjomukhi for those with visual impairments, Parijat for those with speech and hearing impairments, Aparajita for the intellectually challenged, Doronchapa for those with Cerebral Palsy & Shilpi is the vocational training centre.

What does this program aim to do?
We involve parents at every stage to ensure synchronization of rehabilitation at home and school, by conducting trainings, workshops, Parent-Teacher meetings, and frequent home visits. They have also formed Prerana Parivaar, a registered organisation of the parents group

What do we do to help in the integration of our children into the mainstream?
Sports
Sports Activities organised by NBCD -:
In 1990, NBCD organized its first annual Sports meet for special children of all districts of North Bengal. Today we host over 400 cross-disability participants belonging to 28 organizations and 7 districts. This one-day event is called MUSKAAN, and is held in collaboration with Lions Club International and organisation both government and non government.
Culture
Cultural Activities organised by NBCD -:
Culture is a big part of NBCD's vision for children of the future, and with India's culture being so vast, the NBCD wishes to promote diversity amongst the children. Every year, an annual event called "Phooljhuri" is held which is done to encourage young talent amongst the special children of the region.
Community
Based Rehab
CBR provided by the NBCD -:
NBCD provides Community based Rehabilitation (CBR) in three rural blocks of the Siliguri subdivision and ten wards of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation. At present, the CBR programs reach out to many people with disabilities (Approx.) and their families in 18 Gram Panchayats and PwDs in the Corporation area.

NBCD and it's relation to DLRO -:
NBCD is a DLRO (District level resource organization) under the Sarva Siksha Mission, Siliguri Educational District. The activities include -:

Promotion of Integrated Education for children with visual impairments, mental retardation, and cerebral palsy through special education. At present, the service is extended to 196 students.

Arrangement of Special educators.

Awareness generation among the family members.

Promoting barrier-free environment in the institutions.
State Nodal Agency Partner
NBCD'S relation to the SNAP -:
NBCD is appointed by the National Trust as the SNAP (State Nodal Agency Partner) for the six districts of North Bengal helping the State Nodal Agency Centre (SNAC), Kolkata in promoting the policies and programs of the National Trust and strengthening the activities of Local Level Committees - The grass root wings of the Trust - in each of the districts of North Bengal.
